Ghana fail to qualify for World Cup

Date:

The Black Queens of Ghana have failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Such a disappointing feat for Ghana after relinquishing a 1-0 lead to suffer a 1-2 defeat to Malawi.

Malawi, tournament debutants, achieved the unimaginable success against a powerhouse in Africa’s women’s football.

Nottingham Forest’s Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah gave Ghana the breakthrough in the 6th minute with a well-taken volley.

The relentless Malawians, as they had shown so far in the tournament, clawed their back after Temwa’s shot deflected off Alice Kusi past goalkeeper Konlan.

With ten minutes to the end of the regular 90 minutes, Kadzere handed the Malawians their path to both the 2026 WAFCON semifinals and the World Cup.

The outcome of the game will come as a missed chance for Ghana to return to global women’s football stage, after they hoped to build on the 2025 WAFCON third place finish.
