Fancy Gadam mad over GH₵374 royalty from GHAMRO

Date:

As many musicians complained about the country’s royalties, the latest to join the conversation is Afrobeat sensation, Fancy Gadam, who has expressed disappointment for the token he has received from the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) as royalties.

He disclosed that he received an amount of GH₵374 from GHAMRO as royalties and wondered about the particular period spanning the payment.

Fancy Gadam made this known in a recent media interview in which he declared to have received an additional GH₵272, days after publicizing their previous payment of GH₵102 as royalties.

“They sent me GHC102 and after I posted it on my status, and then when my boss saw it he then posted it and yesterday [Friday, August 3] they sent another one. They sent me GHC272.”

“I don’t even know the period of this payment. It’s been a year since I received money from them,” he said.

Fancy Gadam further stated that GHAMRO did not give a detailed account of the criteria for those funds and expressed the need for the organization to add the prerequisites for musicians to understand.

“So you will usually be there, and then they just send you a token for royalties. And I don’t understand because, looking at what I have brought out this year, I know my songs are everywhere in Ghana, especially the competition album that I dropped. Looking at the streams out there,” he stated.

The “Total Cheat” hitmaker, expressed disappointment in the royalty organization as he believed the amount he received did not match up with what was due for him.

“And I have been paying a lot of things before doing my concerts, like VAT, I constantly pay VAT so I don’t understand why they are giving me this token. Is this the only thing I deserve from GAMRO? The last time they paid me was GHC1,800 or so,” he lamented.

GHAMRO was established under Section 49 of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005, and regulated under L.I. 1962 of 2010, to collect and distribute royalties on behalf of authors/composers, and other right holders.
