Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of the German national team, has taken issue with a survey that questioned respondents if they wanted to see more white players on the team.
The ARD public broadcaster’s survey, which has been described as “racist” by the German gaffer, had 21% of its respondents agreeing to see more white players.
Joshua Kimmich, a player for Bayern Munich, previously replied to the survey as racist; his manager on the national team shared this sentiment.
Nagelsman, 36, believes it is time for his country to wake up.
“It is racist. I feel we need to wake up. Many people in Europe had to flee, searching for a safe country.”
There are people in Europe who’ve had to flee because of war, economic factors, environmental disasters, or simply want to be taken in.
We have to ask: What are we doing at the moment? We in Germany are doing very, very well, and when we say something like that, I think it’s crazy how we turn a blind eye and simply block out such things.”
