The Parliament of Ghana, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will officially launch the second edition of the Democracy Cup on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
The launch will take place at 3:00 PM at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House.
A statement released by the Parliamentary Service, and signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations, confirmed that the event will unveil the two football teams selected to compete in this year’s showcase match. It will also outline the format and activities planned around the event.
First introduced in 2024, the Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative aimed at promoting civic engagement and national unity through football. The maiden edition was held on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Asante Kotoko triumphed over Hearts of Oak in a thrilling contest.
“The second edition promises excitement and surprises. We encourage football fans and the public to fully support and participate,” the statement emphasized.
The Democracy Cup forms part of Parliament’s efforts to deepen citizen engagement through sports and commemorate Ghana’s democratic journey. It is expected to become a permanent fixture on the national football calendar.
This year’s launch will draw dignitaries including Members of Parliament, key figures in the sports industry, supporters of participating clubs, and the general public.
