BLACK STARS: We still owe Milovan Rajevac and CK Akonnor – Sports Minister

Date:

Milovan Rajevac and CK Akonnor, the past head coaches of the Black Stars, are still due money by the government for their time spent working with the national team, according to Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports, during a press conference about Ghana’s preparations for the 13th African Games

In January 2020, CK Akonnor took over as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, the senior national side. He served in that position until he was fired following a defeat to South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.

Akonnor’s sacking led to the return of Serbian, Milovan Rajevac, whose time with the team was cut short after the Black Stars exited in the group phase of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon and was immediately sacked after the tournament.

It was claimed that the Sports Ministry still owed the two coaches money months after they had both lost their jobs, and the Minister has acknowledged that despite making an initial payment, there is still money outstanding.

“We still owe Milovan [Rajevac],” he said at the press briefing on Tuesday.

“All of C.K and Milovan, once their contract was terminated, we sat with them, negotiated their exit and C.K was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation same as Milovan.

“We still owe both of them and we have a payment scheduled which I will admit we have not followed because of constraints of funds. As and when we get funds, we will be paying the two coaches.

He also added that both coaches have planned to take the matter to court.

“Both of them have written to the Ghana Football Association threatening to go to court,” he continued.

“We have appealed to them that we are committed to making sure we settle whatever we have agreed with them.”
