Black Queens success down to ex prez; minority gifts team GHS100k

Date:

Former Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif has attributed the success of the Black Queens of Ghana at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo.

With the odds stacked up against them, the Black Queens under the leadership of Kim Lars Björkegren, managed to upset former African champions South Africa 3-2 in a penalty shootout in Rabat.

The Queens, still basking in their newly found glory, honoured the invitation of the Parliament of Ghana, where they were showered with praises and lauded for their achievement at the tournament, where not much was expected of them.

On his turn to address the August House, Member of Parliament for the Yagaba-Kubori constituency, Hon. Ussif, gloated of Ghana’s former president, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo’s committed investment in women’s football in the country.

“The Black Queens performance in Morocco didn’t happen by accident. It’s as a result of many factors, including meticulous planning with the FA, and also the promotion of women’s football… The numerous astroturfs constructed in Ghana are used by most of the WPL teams,” he said.

The former minister also urged the current government to continue from where the Nana Addo-led government left off—deliberate investment into women’s sports and bringing on board corporate Ghana.

The minority caucus in parliament rewarded the Black Queens with GHS100,000 for the achievement in Morocco.
