The Black Galaxies became the second national team of Ghana to fail to qualify for an African championship in 2024.
Led by head coach Didi Dramani, the Black Galaxies suffered a disappointing 1-3 defeat to the Home Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday, December 28.
Following a goalless result in the first leg in Accra, the Ghanaians started the second leg with the famous “park the bus” approach, hoping to catch the Nigerians on the break.
A number of astute football pundits questioned Dramani’s decision to have started five defenders and two midfielders, Issah Yakubu and Mantey, who aren’t popular for their creative prowess, stifling proper supplies to Albert Amoah and Jerry Afriyie.
Sodiq Ismail opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 19th minute after being set up by Captain Nduka, who doubled the lead for the home side two minutes later.
Isaac Saviour capitalized on a defensive error by the Ghanaian defense to end the first-half 3-0 for the Home Eagles.
Amankona Stephen reduced the deficit for the visitors 18 minutes from time but couldn’t prevent the Home Eagles’ return to the CHAN after missing the last two editions.
