Students of the University of Ghana (UG) have been urged to suspend their protest against a 26 per cent increase in accommodation fees as concerns over the cost of student housing continue to draw attention.
The appeal comes amid growing student concerns about the fee adjustment’s financial implications, with calls for dialogue to address their grievances and reach a mutually acceptable solution.
The 26 per cent increase has sparked dissatisfaction among affected students, who are concerned about the rising cost of accommodation and its impact on their ability to pursue their education.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28, the Dean of Student Affairs, Rosina Kyerematen, said Management had engaged the group and assured them of its commitment to addressing students’ immediate, medium-term and long-term needs, including accommodation.
The development highlights the broader challenge of making university education affordable, particularly as students grapple with accommodation and other essential expenses.
While students seek relief from the increased fees, dialogue between student representatives and university management could provide an avenue for addressing their concerns and exploring possible alternatives.
The situation underscores the need for a balanced approach that considers both the financial realities facing students and the university’s accommodation management needs.
Further developments will depend on the response of the students and university authorities to calls for dialogue over the controversial fee increase.
