Why only the King holds power to depose family heads

Date:

Traditional leader and poet Asoreba Kwadwo Frimpong has reaffirmed that the authority to remove a family head in the Asante tradition lies solely with the king, stressing the importance of respecting long-standing customs.

Speaking on Max FM’s Max Morning Dew show hosted by Abena Mozeeno and Akosua Greeno, Asoreba stated that any attempt by individuals or groups to depose a family head without the approval of the king is invalid and goes against established traditional governance.

“In our customs, it is only the king who has the mandate to install or remove a family head. No individual or group has the power to override this authority,” Mr Frimpong emphasised.

This statement comes after the late musical icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba,’s Paakoso family called for a press conference to depose their family head Mr Kofi Owusu, aka ‘Tupac’, for his misconduct concerning the late musical icon Daddy Lumba’s funeral, where disputes over family leadership have led to attempts by factions to challenge the authority of recognised heads without recourse to the king.

Delivering on a key note Asoreba, such actions not only undermine traditional structures but also threaten peace and unity within families and the wider community. He called on all parties involved in such disputes to channel their grievances through the appropriate traditional authorities.

Cultural analysts note that in many traditional systems, the king serves as the ultimate custodian of authority, particularly in matters concerning chieftaincy and family leadership.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have expressed mixed reactions to the declaration, with some supporting the reinforcement of tradition, while others are calling for dialogue and clarity in resolving leadership disputes.
