Professional Boxing to Soon Return to Normalcy

Date:

Professional boxing in Ghana nears what is expected to be a triumphant return by stakeholders after a brief suspension.

An Interim Management Committee (IMC) led by the experienced Samur Captan was set up with a three-month mandate by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MoSR) with support from the National Sports Authority (NSA) on October 1, 2025.

The IMC was charged to implement the recommendations made following the tragic passing of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a bout in Ghana and later died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in March this year.

The sudden death of popular Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, aka ‘Bahubali’, 11 days after his bout with Jacob Dickson triggered the setup of the IMC to implement the medical and safety protocols for professional bouts in Ghana.

A draughted report by the IMC’s Medical Sub-Committee has been submitted to ensure athlete welfare and compliance with world boxing regulations.

This move by the MoSR and NSA is to ‘RESET’ and restore confidence in the sports that have won Ghana so many laurels in years past.
