Sensational singer Sister Derby is still being dragged by netizens over her recent claims that marriage is a form of prostitution.
The assertion, which had since sparked debate online, was made on the Yoofi Unfiltered podcast, where Sister Derby expressed concern about today’s marriages.
Do you know that marriage is a form of prostitution? You pay a bride price; you pay for her for life,” she said.
The “Ama Piano” hitmaker explained that any act for which one pays an exorbitant amount in return for sex is termed as prostitution, and marriage is no different from that.
If men stopped paying, there would be no prostitution. It is all on the man,” she added.
Against this backdrop, some netizens believed her speech was to look down on marriages and to also deter men from performing cultural and traditional rites to formally be recognised as married.
As some believed her claims were misleading, others believed she had boldly tackled the bothering issue of men.
Known for her bold views and advocacy for gender equality, Sister Derby has often used her platform to challenge societal expectations, particularly those affecting women.
