Ghana, Mexico to strengthen ties in youth and sports development

Ghana and Mexico have vowed to strengthen their international relational ties through a collaborative effort in the development of youth and sports.

Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Norma Ang, and Deputy Head of Missions, Mr Fernando Valenzuela, received a warm reception from Sports and Recreation Minister of Ghana, Hon. Kofi Adams, at the ministry’s premises on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

Following the exchange of pleasantries, Ambassador Ang highlighted the key role sports have played in the past years in bringing together both countries before proceeding to assure of her nation’s commitment to ensuring the partnership in boxing, football, and other priority sports.

She further encouraged a photo exhibition to celebrate Mexican sporting heroes alongside a film festival to showcase the rich heritage of the North American country, a proposition which was welcomed by Hon. Adams.

Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, the President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, the President of the Ghana Baseball Federation, and the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, the sports minister touched on both countries familiarisation especially in football and boxing.

Ghanaian boxers, for instance, Ike Quartey’s famous match-up against Oscar De La Hoya, and even the recent international friendly between Ghana and Mexico played in the United States of America in 2023.

Discussions covered a wide range of collaborative opportunities, including:

• Establishing exchange programmes for coaches, referees, and technical officials to enhance Ghana’s capacity across sports disciplines.

• Promoting grassroots and women’s sports development.

• Exploring the Free Zones concept to attract investment into sports infrastructure and partnerships.

• Facilitating sports tourism and inviting Mexican teams to consider Ghana as a training and preparation destination.

• Examining the potential for special visa arrangements to enable fans to travel smoothly between host countries during the 2026 World Cup.

Hon. Adams commended Mexico for their joint hosting of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup with the USA and Canada, while confidently stating that “Ghana would qualify”.
