Avoid visa agents, they’re dishonest – U.S. Consul General

Date:

The Consul General of the United States Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Elliot Fertik, has cautioned Ghanaians against relying on visa agents or self-styled consultants when applying for U.S. visas, describing them as dishonest and misleading.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Fertik noted a worrying rise in visa applicants being deceived by fraudulent intermediaries, which often results in rejections and unnecessary financial loss.

“Visa agents often claim they have inside connections at the Embassy and can guarantee approval for thousands of dollars. Let me be clear—they are lying and ripping you off. It’s probably not legitimate,” he stressed.

Mr. Fertik explained that a significant number of U.S. visa denials in Ghana stem from the involvement of these unauthorized third parties who often cause applicants to submit incomplete or false documentation.

He emphasized that the correct and only legal way to apply for a U.S. visa is through the Embassy’s official website. He encouraged applicants to personally handle their applications and use the available resources, including contact numbers and email support listed online.

“You can do it yourself through our website. Everything you need is there, including contacts if you encounter challenges,” he added.

The Consul General’s warning comes amid rising reports of visa-related scams, where desperate applicants are charged exorbitant fees by individuals falsely claiming to have influence over the process.

Mr. Fertik urged all prospective travellers to avoid these scams and instead seek accurate information directly from the U.S. Embassy’s official platforms.
