U-20 UPDATES: Ghana Can Match Egypt’s Might with Quality – Ofei

Date:

Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei says his team is fully prepared for a high-stakes quarter-final clash against hosts Egypt at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the match as a “final” and a critical step toward FIFA U-20 World Cup qualification.

Speaking ahead of the showdown at the New Suez Stadium on Monday, Ofei acknowledged the gravity of the occasion.

“This is going to be like a final for us. It’s a qualifier to the World Cup and that means everything. We’re not just playing a nation; we’re also playing against history,” he said.

The Black Satellites, four-time African U-20 champions and 2009 world champions at the youth level, will face an Egyptian side that Ofei admits is both talented and dangerous.

“Egypt is a decent and good side. Ghanaians know their strengths. They have some very technically gifted players. I respect the team, but I also believe we have quality—and we know our quality,” Ofei noted.

The coach stressed the importance of sticking to Ghana’s traditional footballing identity and values, something he says the team has embraced throughout the tournament.

“We need to stay true to our DNA and our philosophy. My boys are hungry for success. They want to show Ghana that they are the future of our football,” he said.

Ofei also highlighted his team’s readiness for any scenario the match might present.

“We are prepared for anything—extra time, penalties, whatever comes. But we are coming into this with a clear game plan, and we aim to execute it with strength and belief,” he added.

Looking to Ghana’s rich football legacy, Ofei said it serves as inspiration rather than pressure.

“Yes, Ghana has a history, but it’s not a burden. We understand what football means to Ghanaians. This is a fantastic opportunity for these boys and the entire team to elevate themselves.”

Before the football talk began, the coach offered a heartfelt tribute in honour of Mother’s Day.

“To my own mother and to the awesome mother of my beautiful kids, I say thank you and happy Mother’s Day. Your love and support mean everything to us.”

The Black Satellites are set to kick off against Egypt at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT) in what promises to be a thrilling encounter with a place at the U-20 World Cup on the line.
