Arsenal eliminate UCL holders Real Madrid

Date:

Arsenal have qualified for a UEFA Champions League semi-final for the third time in their history, after 2005-06 and 2008-09.

The Gunners managed to achieve the unimaginable against the current champions, Real Madrid, beating them at home and away.

Mikel Arteta and his team went into the second leg at a packed Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night with a commanding 3-0 first leg lead.

Though it appeared Arsenal were heavy favourites to progress given their 3-0 lead gap, there was a sense of the feeling of yet another Real Madrid comeback.

Bukayo Saka handed the English side the advantage after a dramatic goalless first-half, which saw the home team’s given penalty rescinded courtesy ofa VAR check.

Vinicius Jr restored parity two minutes after Arsenal’s opener in the 63rd minute, but it proved only to be a consolation as Gabriel Martinelli snatched the winner in the 93rd minute of the tie.

Next for Arsenal in the semi-final is Paris St-Germain.
