Why less-financed sporting disciplines need not depend on government

Date:

Head of Sports at the Ghana Revenue Authority, Eddie Frimpong, has urged federations of less financed sports to not entirely depend on the government for funding.

Mr. Frimpong had recently led the Ghana Revenue Authority Ladies hockey team to their fourth consecutive Africa triumph, beating Egyptian giants Smouha Hockey Club 3-0 at the 26th Africa Cup for Club Championship (ACCC) in Egypt.

Speaking on Max FM’s Sports Pack show on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, he refused to blame the government for apparent less attention on other disciplines apart from ball, but insisted they must seek other avenues to earn sponsorships.

“I wouldn’t blame the government in general. I think we, just as a country, we need to have a structure in place, identify the various sporting disciplines, and see what they need, what the government can do, and what the association itself can look out for because the government can never provide all.

It is left to the management of each and every association or federation to look for sponsorships, opportunities, scholarships. It is all about us, what we want, and where we want to go to,” Mr. Frimpong said to Nana Darkwa Gyasi.

His assertions, though with good intent, may not entirely be welcomed by other federations due to the constant complaints of lack of sponsorships.

Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, in recent times, has assured equal attention would be given to all disciplines.
