Ghana’s A-list musicians are noisemakers – Rocky Dawuni

Date:

Legendary Root reggae musician Rocky Dawuni has asserted that the renowned A-list musicians in the country are noisemakers.

According to him, music is not about noise-making nor hype but an ability to create and write a song that resonates with generations.

Speaking exclusively with Max Drive in Accra on Friday, the three-time Grammy Award nominee for Best Global Music Album from Ghana stated that musicians like Abiana, Ayisi, Delasi, Lazzybwoy, and Checheku were the future of Ghana music due to their creative skills.

“These are the artists we should pay attention to. When the artist has so many dimensions, you know that they have the capacity to grow,” he stated.

Rocky Dawuni observed that the renowned musicians were only after hype; thus, they only created beat-driven songs that would lose their relevance in years to come.

“We think that Jey, Jey, Jey, jey… noise is what we call music. Hype is not music! Music is when somebody has that spirit of creativity and has the ability of songwriting,” he stated.

The “In Ghana” hitmaker noted that there was a vast difference between making beats and songwriting.

“There could be a great beat that you can go and do anything and the beat will cut across because we are in a beat-driven reality right now. 20 years from now, when that beat is dead, it will be left with what was the song, so song writers are important,” he maintained.

Using Lauryn Hill as an example, Rocky Dawuni said the American musician was still making a name due to songs she sang years ago and expressed the need for timeless music and good songwriting skills, which were beyond beat-making.
