#BlackStars: I used first salary to build a house for my mom – Derek Boateng

Date:

It’s often said that women are the driving force behind the achievement of successful men, but for the majority of football players, it’s their mothers.

Derek Boateng, a retired international player from Ghana, has always given credit for his career accomplishments to his visually handicapped mother.

He tells the story of how, through the late football administrator Alhaji Sly Tetteh, he used his first income to build a house for his mother in Europe.

“I made my mom proud. She is cery proud of me and listens to radio every time just to hear my name. Growing up was really difficult for her, so she is really happy and proud about how things have turned out.

The first salary I got from my first European club was used to build a house for her. I gave the money to the late Sly Tetteh and Mr. Ansong to build a house for my mom. I didn’t touch anything. There were times when I came to Ghana and had to sleep at her place because my house wasn’t ready yet,” he said in an interview.
