The head coach of the Super Falcons, Randy Waldrum, has slammed his team’s failure to capitalize on opportunities as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the World Champions, Spain.
Alexia Putellas’ looping free-kick was enough for Spain to book their place in the quarterfinals of the women’s football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
This is the second 1-0 defeat the team has suffered in the event after an opening 1-0 defeat to Brazil thanks to a brilliant Gabi Nunes strike.
Waldrum, despite being convinced his side can compete with the world’s best teams, said, “We had three to four good opportunities today; regrettably, we did not convert them,” the American said after the game.
“We had one in the first half, a breakaway, and Asisat and Rash (Rasheedat Ajibade) missed those chances. We had chances; regrettably, the Spanish converted theirs.”
With their exit from the competition sealed, the Super Falcons will face Japan in the last game of Group C.
