#MAXNEWS: Ex-EC Chair Charlotte Osei Becomes ‘Safohen’

Date:

Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, has been ceremonially appointed as Safohen of Nkum Asafo Group number 4. According to a Facebook post dated June 8 by Osei herself, she will assume the title of Safohen Nana Ama Kesson.

During the upcoming Fetu Oguaa Afahye Festival in September, Osei will lead Nkum Asafo group 4 as a warrior. In images shared on her Facebook page, Osei is depicted adorned as a Queen mother, brandishing a whip, symbolizing leadership.

The Fetu Afahye is an annual celebration observed by the people and chiefs of the Cape Coast Traditional Area in Ghana’s Central Region. Spanning a week from September 1 to September 7, the festival draws natives from diverse backgrounds to partake in the festivities.

Preceding the Fetu Afahye, the paramount chief of Oguaa undergoes a week-long seclusion to consult with deities. During this period, a ban on drumming, dancing, noise-making, and fishing in the Fosu Lagoon is imposed.

The climax of the festival occurs on the first Saturday in September, marked by a procession through the community accompanied by jubilant dancing and celebration. Fetu Afahye symbolizes the commencement of a new year for the Oguaa people and concludes with an interdenominational service at Chapel Square.
