Perry Okudzeto: Government Open To Football Resuming Behind Closed Doors

Date:

According to Perry Okudzeto, the Deputy Sports Minister, resuming the Ghana Premier League (GPL) behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic is not a farfetched option.

On March 16, the GPL was suspended by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in accordance with a government directive to impose a ban on public gatherings due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Even though the Coronavirus pandemic is not over fully out of the system and with uncertainty when this will happen, the world has been learning to live with the virus with many sectors resuming operations with strict health measures in place.

With Germany already starting football activities again but without fans, leagues around the world are working out how to resume playing.

There are talks by people about the future of the 2019/20 football season dominating local media platforms including the GFA indicating that they will make a final decision whether to resume or cancel the season by June 30.

As pressure mounts on Ghana’s football governing body in this regard, options of playing behind closed doors have been thought of.

Speaking on an Accra-based FM station, Perry Okudzeto suggested that such an option is explorable.

However, he was quick to reveal that such a decision hasn’t been taken.

“The option of playing in empty stadia is fine. When we get to that point and we think that it’s the best option for us in terms of making out game safe it will be one of the options we will consider. However, as we speak that decision has not been taken,” he said.
