MAX LIFESTYLE: Let’s promote Waakye to gain global recognition – Reggie Rockstone

Date:

Veteran musician Reggie Rockstone has urged Ghanaians to project the local dish “Waakye” for it to gain international recognition.

According to him, the time has come for Ghanaians to shift their focus from the Jollof rice debate with Nigeria to Waakye for it to gain global recognition, just as Senegalese have done with Jollof.

While Jollof rice has been the subject of passionate arguments and friendly rivalries between Ghana and Nigeria, Reggie Rockstone said there was a need to promote Waakye on a global scale, appreciating its unique features and special effects that set it apart from other dishes.

Expressing concern over the neglect of Waakye, which he said was deeply rooted in Ghana, Reggie stated that Jollof was not a Ghanaian dish and expressed the need for Ghana to rather promote Waakye.

“Jollof doesn’t belong to us; it comes from Senegal. Our own food, Waakye, has been neglected, and we’re rather fighting others for what belongs to someone else,” he explained.

The hip-hop icon highlighted the distinct qualities of Waakye, drawing attention to its rich flavor, unique preparation methods, and cultural significance.

“When you look at Waakye’s features and special effects that surround it and you compare it to Jollof, you’ll realize Jollof is nowhere near Waakye,” he asserted.

The musician called on Ghanaians to unite in championing Waakye and showcasing it as a symbol of Ghana’s culinary excellence.

“Instead of arguing with Nigeria over Jollof, let’s prioritize Waakye, which comes from Ghana, in high esteem,” he added.
