MAX NEWS: PRESEC-Legon is now an eight-time winner of NSMQ

Date:

The National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) of 2023 saw the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) triumph, their eighth overall.

They surprised everyone by surpassing Achimota School and Opoku Ware Senior High School in the competition’s final round, winning 40 points against Achimota School’s 28 and Opoku Ware SHS’s 23.

In the exciting semifinal games, Opoku Ware School, PRESEC Legon, and Achimota School defeated some of their fiercest opponents to advance to the championship game.

PRESEC was awarded a total of GH¢70,000, with Achimota School receiving GH¢50,000 and Opoku Ware receiving GH¢35,000.

The school holds the record with eight victories and is the only one to have won the championship two times in a row. The NSMQ honored the students who performed very well throughout the competition in addition to the major prizes.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, praised Primetime Limited for sustaining the competition for the last thirty years.

He stated that the competition serves as an excellent platform for nurturing and preparing young minds for the government’s Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) agenda.

The Managing Director of Primetime Limited, Mrs. Nana Akua Mensa-Bonsu, disclosed the company’s intentions to create an All-Africa Science and Maths Quiz by 2025, open to all interested African nations.

“In line with our interest in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), an intellectual competition of the caliber of the NSMQ can and should be exported,” she added.

The NSMQ competition is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year since its inception in 1993.
