MAX ENTERTAINMENT: Songs composed in English lack substance – Kwabena Kwabena

Date:

Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena says songwriters in Africa find it difficult to express themselves well when they compose English songs.

That, he said, has made many songs that are sung in English lose their meaning and standard.
In a media interview, Kwabena Kwabena said that though there were exceptions, most English tracks written by African songwriters lacked good lyrics and were of no quality standard.

“The truth of the matter is, songs done in English by our African musicians lack a lot of depth. Take 10 African songs, and you can sample just about 10 lyrics that are dangling or intersecting with almost every song. And that’s not great songwriting,” he noted.

Kwabena Kwabena stated that a good song should have a good melody, a catchy chorus, and a good message, which the English songs in Africa lacked.

He, however, named Lasmid, Olivetheboy, Black Sherif, and Amerado as young Ghanaian musicians who were doing well in songwriting.
