Christian Akwasi Asamoah, a Kumawood actor and producer known as Big Akwes in the entertainment industry, has voiced his frustration over the failure of previous administrations to adequately fund the nation’s creative arts sector so that the film industry might compete on an equal footing with foreign sectors.
According to him, Ghana’s movie industry collapsed after producers and investors withdrew their support.
Speaking exclusively on Max Morning Dew in Accra on Wednesday, Big Akwes decried that many producers were left poor, coupled with debts, after the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) led the country’s cinemas to be closed down.
The act, he explained compelled producers to store movies which were ready for market in the house.
“It is vital for us to know that those producers took loans and now they are left with nothing. They are financially handicapped to an extent that if you an actor and you don’t gift them with something it is hard for them to survive,” he lamented.
The actor asserted that Ghana’s movie industry would have achieved unimaginable heights if the government had backed it as it had promised the stakeholders
“In this situation, actors and actresses wouldn’t be compelled to become producers and directors to shoot their own movies for the market,” he added.
