According to Frederick Acheampong, the Management Committee Chairman of the Black Meteors, Ibrahim Tanko, the coach of the team, does not receive a monthly salary as commonly believed. Instead, Tanko is said to be in a similar condition as national team footballers, who receive allowances and bonuses rather than fixed salaries.
“No [Ibrahim Tanko doesn’t receive a salary for coaching the Black Meteors]. Because he works for his club so just like the footballers who play for the national team they work for their clubs so they only earn per diem based on the number of days they have been in camp and are also only paid winning bonuses when they win a match,”
The former Dortmund player previously led the team in 2019 during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, where they finished fourth and failed to qualify for the Olympic Games. He was given another opportunity to lead the team in the U-23 AFCON in Morocco, with the hope of achieving better results. However, the team’s performance in the tournament was worse, as they were eliminated in the group stage.
These results have raised concerns about the commitment and integrity of the team which has been refuted by Mr. Acheampong: “I’ve known Tanko for a number of years and I’ve known his integrity. He is someone I can trust and will not be influenced by any money despite not being paid monthly.”
