CHAN 2022: Senegal beat Algeria on penalties to become first West African country to win

Date:

The Foxes of Algeria were defeated by the Teranga Lions of Senegal in the 2022 CAF Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) championship match.

Senegal made history by becoming the first nation from West Africa to win the illustrious trophy since it was first awarded in 2009.

Both sides got off to a fast start with some good passing from both sets of players, making for a very competitive game.

In the first several minutes of the game, Algeria, the host nation, was a little stronger and produced a lot of half-chances, but Senegal’s defense held firm.

Senegal also had opportunities in the first half, but they were unable to capitalize on them, resulting in an exciting goalless stalemate for the first 45 minutes of play.

Senegal performed admirably in the second half, giving the home team little chance at the back by putting their bodies on the line to thwart all of the home team’s attacks.

During regulation, the game concluded in a thrilling end-to-end 0-0 tie, and after extra time, both teams remained unbreakable until the penalty shootouts.

Senegal’s goalie Sy felt he saved the first penalty kick from Algeria after Senegal successfully converted the first one, but the referee demanded a replay after Sy crossed the line.

Senegal missed the fourth penalty, but Aymen Mahious was unable to convert the fifth because the Senegalese goaltender stopped his feeble attempt, sending the game into sudden death.

Senegal made five out of six kicks, and when Algeria missed the ensuing attempt, the Local Lions of Teranga from Senegal won the match and the trophy.

Senegal only allowed one goal all during the competition, while Algeria went the entire tournament without giving up a goal from open play.

Senegal defeated Algeria on penalties to become the first Sub-Saharan nation to win the CHAN championship.
