2022 World Cup: Messi-led Argentina crowned the champions after beating France in an extraordinary final

Date:

Argentina defeated France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in a memorable and outstanding match to win the title of World Champions.

After a nail-biting 120-minute final ended 3-3, Argentina defeated the 2018 champions 4-2 on penalties.

To cap off a spellbinding tournament in Qatar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe put on a display in an astounding final.

Argentina was fully dominant and deserved of the advantage after the spot in the first half.

Ousmane Dembele was dazzled by Angel Di Maria, who was dreadful on the left wing, before the Barcelona player tripped him in the area.

Messi took the initiative and sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way without hesitation. The South Americans kept up the pressure and scored another through a cutting but exquisitely executed counterattack with Messi at its center and Di Maria completing it.

Argentina have the trophy in their hands, and France lacked a shot on goal for about 60 minutes when viewers tuned in to the Kylian Mbappe display.

The PSG player scored France’s opening goal from the penalty spot after Otamendi fouled Kolo Muani without justification.

A few seconds later, the 23-year-old equalized with a spectacular volley to force extra time and end Messi’s World Cup hopes.

Argentina regained control in the extra time and recovered their rhythm, but they had to wait until Messi’s second goal of the game in the 108th minute.

After Mbappe’s goal-bound shot hit Montiel’s hand, Argentina appeared to have won the trophy when France restored parity from the penalty spot.

Mbappe once more stepped up and performed admirably.

Kolo Mauni had a one-on-one opportunity to give France the lead in the waning seconds of extra time, but Emiliano Martinez made an incredible stop to force penalty kicks.

Mbappe scored the opening goal for France in the shootouts, while Messi also converted on his first attempt for Argentina.

Emi Martinez, the hero for Argentina in the quarterfinal, once again put on a spectacular display by saving Coman’s penalty before Tchouameni missed to give Argentina a significant edge.

Argentina’s second and third penalty kicks were scored by Dybala and Paredes, and France’s fourth was scored by Mauni Kolo.

For the final goal, Argentina’s defender Montiel stepped up and sent Lloris the wrong way to seal the victory.
