2022 World Cup: It was always an honor to represent Ghana at the world stage – Otto Addo

Date:

Otto Addo, a former Black Stars coach, expressed his gratitude for the chance to serve Ghana on the international scene both as a player and a coach.

On June 17, 2006, at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Ghana faced off against the Czech Republic in a 2006 FIFA World Cup match, which Ghana won 2-0. Otto Addo began for Ghana as the right midfielder. He participated in Ghana’s 2-1 victory over the United States in 2006 at Nuremberg’s Frankenstadion.

Prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he was appointed head scout of the Ghana national football team after retiring.

Otto Addo has been designated the Black Stars’ interim coach, the Ghana Football Association announced on February 9th, 2022, in advance of the team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup final play-off matches against Nigeria.

He qualified Ghana for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 1-1 tie with Nigeria’s Super Eagles on March 29, 2022 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium (on away goals). At the Baba Yara Stadium on March 25, the Ghanaian Black Stars and the Super Eagles shared a scoreless draw.

After leading Ghana over Nigeria’s Super Eagles, his term was extended.

Ghana played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they lost two games against Portugal and Uruguay while winning one game against South Korea. Following the Uruguay game, Otto Addo made his exit announcement.

He posted on his official Instagram page while thinking back on his time coaching Ghana and competing on the international stage:

“16 years apart but the feeling is the same. It was always an honor and a blessing to represent the culture, hard work and the passion of our nation at the world stage. Let’s use the power of football and our love for the game to build and grow together. Ghana Osey!!!!”
