The Member of Parliament for Madina, who doubles as a human rights lawyer, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has called for the immediate arrest of Nungua Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII.
According to him, the customary marriage between the 63-year-old Ga priest and the 12-year-old Naa Okromo was a Trokosi practice.
Speaking in a Zoom interview with the media on Monday, Sosu said the practice had been outlawed in the statutory books of the country and should be frowned upon.
He said various articles, including Articles 26 and 28 of the 1992 Constitution, frowned on the practice of marrying or being betrothed to a minor and even expressed the need for the laws of the country to be dealt with by the parents of the victim.
Sosu indicated that a child under 12 years old did not even have the capacity to consent to being in a marriage relationship.
“She has no capacity to contract or be contracted in any marriage. Marriage by law is a union between two consenting adults, not an adult and a minor,” he stated.
Sosu insisted that Ga Priest “must be prosecuted in accordance with our laws,” as Section 14 of the Children’s Act 1998 and 560 was against children being forced to be betrothed.
“The justification on the grounds of culture does not hold water. What the man has done is plainly wrong and must be told in the face, and we must insist that he be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with our law,” he added.
Sosu today petitioned the IGP to investigate and hold Gborbu Wulomo accountable for his misdeeds.
