UCL 2023/24: Lazio keeper joins three other keepers to score in the Champions League

Date:

The UEFA Champions League matchday one kicked off last night and it reminded us why it is club football’s biggest competition with lots of goals, drama and history.

Lazio goalkeeper Provedel made history as he became the fourth goalkeeper in history to score in the UEFA Champions League against Atletico Madrid in the 94th minute.

Other goalkeepers to have scored are Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama, who scored a penalty for Hapoel Tel Aviv against Olympique Lyon in 2010.

In 2009, against AZ Alkmaar, Standard Liege’s Sinan Bolat became the first player to score an open-play goal with a header in the 95th minute.

Hans-Jörg Butt, a German goalkeeper, scored three goals in the competition, all from the penalty spot.
