The grouping of the Black Stars in Group I for the upcoming tournament has been described as tricky by former Ghana defender John Paintsil. The draw, which took place during the 45th CAF General Assembly, placed Ghana alongside familiar opponents and other challenging teams.
In Group I, the Black Stars will face West African rivals Mali, as well as the teams from Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros, and Chad. This grouping poses a challenge for Ghana as they will be up against strong teams from the region and other determined opponents.
John Paintsil’s characterization of the group as tricky suggests that the Black Stars will have to navigate tough competition to advance in the tournament.
“It’s not a difficult group but a tricky one. We have Mali, Madagascar, CAR, and Comoros, which have a history with us. Comoros believe their history against us at the Nations Cup is still there”
“Countries paired against Ghana in the group have the upper hand because they have nothing to lose playing us. If we beat them is no use but if they beat us it’s big news and that tells you it’s a tricky group. Mali is the most stubborn football country in Africa because they can upset you anytime” he said.
