The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has given strong assurances that Ghana is fully prepared to host the 2027 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with renovation works already underway at key venues across the country.

Speaking on the matter, Bagbara Tanko, head of public relations at the ministry, expressed confidence in the country’s ability to stage a successful tournament.

“Yes, I will say with the responsibility of the ministry, he [the public] can be assured of that. That is why we have started renovations with our various stadiums, which include Baba Yara in Kumasi and Accra Sports Stadium, so that with time we will be ready for the tournament,” Tanko stated.

Ghana was awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. The tournament will mark a significant moment for the nation, coinciding with celebrations of Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary. It will be the second time Ghana hosts the competition, having previously staged it in 1999.

The Ministry has prioritised upgrading major facilities to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Works have commenced at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and the Accra Sports Stadium, two of the country’s most prominent football venues. Officials indicate that further improvements to playing surfaces, seating, lighting, and other infrastructure will follow to ensure full compliance ahead of the event.

While National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has recently noted that no venue currently meets the full requirements and that adequate funding and time will be essential, the Ministry maintains that proactive renovation efforts put Ghana on course to deliver a successful tournament.

The 2027 U-20 AFCON is expected to boost youth football development, stimulate local economies in host cities, and reinforce Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
