Salah to shake off injury for Egypt versus Australia

Date:

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has begun a treatment programme after scans confirmed he suffered a hamstring strain during the draw with Iran, national team doctor Mohamed Abou El-Ela said.

Salah felt pain during Egypt’s final Group G match and was substituted in the second half. The national team’s physician said scans showed a strain in the posterior muscles, with the player now undergoing rehabilitation before the round of 32 match against Australia.

Left-back Ahmed Fatouh is unlikely to face Australia after scans showed a hamstring tear, while Mohamed Abdelmonem sustained a severe ankle bruise against Iran and is being prepared for the match.

Egypt face Australia on July 3 for a place in the World Cup last 16. Hossam Hassan’s side reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing second in Group G.

Australia also enter the tie with injury concerns. The Socceroos have already ruled Mathew Leckie and Jacob Italiano out of the rest of the tournament.
