Police halt press conference of group protesting encroachment on cemetery lands

Date:

Police personnel from the Prampram Divisional Police Command in the Greater Accra Region today, May 4, 2021, halted a press conference by a group in the Kpone Municipality over alleged encroachment of lands.

The group, calling itself Aggrieved Indigenes of Kpone, is unhappy about the alleged takeover of 30 acres out of a total of 39 acres of their cemetery lands by some companies.

They say several attempts to get some responses from the Kpone Municipal Assembly and the Kpone Traditional Council on the release of the said lands have been unsuccessful.

David Mensah Nortey, an executive member of the group said aggrieved indigenes had petitioned the chief of the area on the matter and is awaiting a response.

“We wrote to the chief because he is the allodia owner, and he is holding the land in trust for us. We have written to the Municipal Chief Executive because, before somebody will put a block there, he needs a permit from the assembly.”

Mr. Nortey said his group also plans to protest the alleged encroachment and had informed the police of this.

But he said the police “appealed to us to use some other options.”

Going forward, Mr. Nortey said legal action remained an option for them.

The group also plans to continue to seek an avenue for protest.

“The way forward is that we have a series of options. We can use legal means and go to court from today or keep appealing to the police to give us a time and a day to do our demonstration.”
