Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has reacted to the death of his former player Jorge Costa at Porto between 2002 and 2004.
Mourinho fought back tears and paid tribute to his former captain at a news conference on Tuesday ahead of Fenerbahce’s Champions League third qualifying round tie with Feyenoord on Wednesday.
“If he [Costa] could speak with me now he would say ‘do your press conference, tomorrow play the game mister and win the game – forget about me’,” Mourinho said. “I’m going to try and do my job today and tomorrow, and then I will cry after.”
Costa died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club’s training centre.
Costa also won 50 caps for the Portugal national team during his playing career.
