Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, visited the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency following reports of violent disturbances that disrupted voting earlier in the day.
The IGP, accompanied by his security entourage, assessed the situation and held discussions with on-duty Electoral Commission (EC) officials and police personnel to gather firsthand details about the incident.
Earlier, voting at the Odorkor Methodist 1 station was temporarily suspended after unidentified men in a pickup vehicle stormed the premises, overpowering police officers stationed there.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers physically assaulted individuals, including former MP and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson. The assailants reportedly moved toward the voting area and attacked political figures present.
Police officers eventually regained control of the situation, and calm has since been restored at the polling station. Voting is expected to resume under tighter security.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia condemned the violence, calling it a betrayal of democratic values.
He criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), stating the attacks undermine the peaceful electoral process they vowed to uphold after winning the 2024 general elections.
