Shakira’s lawyer has accused Gerard Pique of being the reason for her financial problems, claiming that she might have saved £100 million by dating Sergio Ramos, his rival.
After reaching a plea deal on Tuesday, Pau Molins claimed that her 11-year relationship with the retired Barcelona footballer resulted in her being charged with six counts of tax fraud rather than just three.
He added that there is no wealth tax for citizens of Madrid, the city where Ramos played for Real.
However, residents of Catalonia—where Shakira and Barcelona star Pique resided—must pay wealth tax.
Shakira would have saved about £100 million if she had lived with Ramos, who is based in Madrid, as the Real player does not live in a region where wealth tax is levied.
“If she had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos and not with Pique,” Molins jibed to Rac1, “It would have cost her much less money. Out of six crimes, three could not have been imputed to him [Pique].
“So much so that they fill their mouths with the equality of the Spanish. If you are a resident in Catalonia you can go to prison for a crime that is impossible, with the same conduct, in Madrid, for example, because there is no wealth tax.”
