GMA demands prosecution of Christ Embassy leaders over COVID-19 protocol breaches

Date:

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has asked for the immediate prosecution of the leadership of the Christ Embassy Church Ghana for allowing its members to flagrantly breach COVID-19 safety protocols at an event organized at the Fantasy Dome in Accra last Friday.

The group, in a statement, said the church service was not only a potential super-spreader event but also unlawful and reckless, for which the organizers should not be allowed to go scot-free.

In a statement to condemn the act, the GMA demanded that the Attorney General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service should as a “matter of urgency ensure the swift prosecution of all persons (leadership of the Christ Embassy Church Ghana, the organizers of the said event, owners and managers of the Fantasy Dome and any other culprits”.

Trending videos of the alleged gathering, dubbed “Pneumatica Night” shows an unmasked mass crowd, screaming, chanting, and dancing to the “evangelism” of their similarly unmasked leaders.

But this the Medical Association says “defies all logic especially during this crucial time of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“The GMA strongly condemns this behavior by the leadership, organizers, and members of the Christ Embassy Church, Ghana. Their unlawful act will set a bad example for others to follow if it goes unpunished. A swift prosecution is needed to serve as a deterrent to all,” the group’s statement added.

The event has generated lots of public concern,

Already, the police are investigating the incident after it locked up the Fantasy Dome where the event was held.

The police said management and leaders of the church are undergoing interrogation over the unlawful development adding that “any person found culpable will be arrested and duly prosecuted”, it assured.

Social media users have criticized the church for the non-adherence of the safety protocols expressing concerns about a possible third wave of the virus amidst the country’s difficulties in acquiring vaccines for the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination exercise.

Others including the Christian Council of Ghana, the health authorities, civil society organizations and some Members of Parliament have expressed outrage over the development and slammed the church over they say is its irresponsibility.
