Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele says she suffered a mental breakdown when the public criticized her over her failed marriage.
According to her, she passed through torments on social media, making her lose her zeal to live.
Speaking in an interview with Chude Jideonwo on his Live Talk show, Akindele said despite her positive public image and resilience, she was dying in silence.
“I was dying in silence because I was acting strong. Every time I showed strength, they threw more at me-at home, from family, at work, in society. You’re the role model for a lot of people out there,” she said.
Akindele stated that she was reluctant to seek therapy due to fear and judgment of society but it got to a point that she had to make that bold decision to seek therapy for her mental well-being after a video mocking her for her broken marriage went viral.
“I cried and cried and cried. Then I told myself, you need to speak to someone about this. You can’t continue like this,” she shared.
Akindele observed that after seeing a therapist, she regained her emotional stability and the zeal to move on in life.
“When I started speaking to a therapist, I felt better…Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better. It’s very important for you to speak up,” she added.
