According to the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the decision of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to declare President Akufo-Addo its candidate without an election or Congress even if he had no competitor is “inappropriate”.
Last week, the NPP indicated that it has accepted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the flag bearer of their party for Election 2020 and will declare him as the flag bearer of the party for the 2020 polls.
Mr John Boadu, the General Secretary of the party, on Wednesday night [June 3, 2020], announced this to the media after a National Council meeting of the NPP party.
According to Mr John Boadu, the National Vetting Committee of the party reported to the National Council that at the close of nomination, it was only President Akufo-Addo who had filed to contest as the flag bearer of the party.
Although the report was accepted by the National Council and in due time the President will be declared as the flag bearer by popular acclamation, Mr Agbodza has expressed his disapproval saying that was “not democracy”.
Speaking on TV3, monitored by www.maxfmlive.com , he took on the NPP for not showing they are real apostles of democracy as “they claim”.
Mr Agbodza said there should have been an election for the party to decide whether they are satisfied with the bad performance of Akufo-Addo. He said it was not too late for the party to “do the right thing”.
The two major political parties in Ghana, NPP and NDC, have been trading accusations over who is most ready for the upcoming election. The NPP accuses the NDC of not having a running mate while the NDC says the NPP has no flagbearer for the 2020 poll.
