Argentina Leads Opposition to Ghana-Led Transatlantic Slave Trade Bill

Date:

Argentina, Israel, and the United States of America have taken a stand against the Ghana-led resolution at the United Nations General Assembly.

Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is sponsoring a bill recognising the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity”.

Though the bill received a majority of votes, the three notable nations, especially Argentina, failed to provide prominent explanations for their opposition.

The United States of America and other Western nations, despite acknowledging the ills of the slave trade, argued that current governments must not be held liable for the crimes.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and European Union member states chose to abstain rather than oppose.
