PHOTOSTORY: Foreign Affairs Ministry Rolls Out Chip-Embedded Biometric Passport

Date:

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has officially launched the much-anticipated chip-embedded biometric passport at the Passport Office headquarters in Accra.

This advanced travel document, in development for over a decade, replaces the previous version and brings Ghana in line with global passport technology standards.

The new e-passport incorporates enhanced security features, including a microprocessor chip that securely stores biometric data and the passport holder’s photograph.

It also complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, offering citizens a more secure and internationally accepted form of identification.

“This rollout is a milestone for Ghana and reflects our commitment to digital innovation and secure identity systems,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during the launch.

As part of the implementation, Ghana Post will provide free home delivery services, with collection options at designated post offices for applicants with address limitations. This move ensures convenient and seamless passport delivery, particularly under the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, which will see passport offices operating on shift systems nationwide.

Faster and More Efficient Processing

The biometric passport offers improved processing timelines:

  • Standard applications: 15 working days

  • Expedited services: within 24 hours

This new system is also designed to be cost-effective, benefiting both the government and applicants.

Security and Integration

The document’s security features include:

  • Latent and patent anti-fraud indicators

  • Secure chip encryption

  • Integration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) for identity verification

These measures provide robust protection against forgery and unauthorized duplication.

Dignitaries at the Launch

Notable personalities who received symbolic copies and attended the launch included:

  • Chief of Staff Julius Debrah

  • Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stanislav Dogbe

  • Minister of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

  • Minister for Digital Technology & Innovation, Sam George

  • MP for Cape Coast South, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan

  • MD of Ghana Post, Rita Sraha

  • MP for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije

  • Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai

This technological leap underscores Ghana’s push toward modern, efficient, and globally accepted identity systems.
