8th Parliament to Dissolve Tonight at 11 PM

Date:

The 8th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic will officially dissolve today, January 6, 2025, paving the way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament. This marks the conclusion of a legislative term that began on January 7, 2021.

The dissolution will occur during a final sitting presided over by Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. Members of Parliament will wrap up pending business and formally bid farewell to the chamber.

The 8th Parliament was historically significant, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) initially holding equal seats—137 each—with one Independent Member. This rare balance resulted in intense debates and heightened negotiations throughout the term.

At midnight, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in, ushering in the 9th Parliament. The session will also include the election of a Speaker, either confirming the incumbent or selecting a new leader.

The incoming Parliament faces critical challenges, including addressing economic recovery, healthcare reforms, and disputes from the recent elections.

As this transition unfolds, Ghanaians are eager to see how the new legislative body will handle its mandate in shaping the nation’s future.
