#Dumsor: Ghana’s situation with power outages

Date:

According to reports from JoyNews, GRIDCo’s attentive monitoring of the current power crisis (dumsor) experienced in the country since the beginning of March 2024 revealed a surge of 3,618 MW, 367 MW more than the available capacity of 3,251 MW.

The reports go on further to state that Ghana is utilizing 58% of its total capacity of 5,626 MW, leaving a deficit of 2,375 MW, affecting electricity supply infrastructure.

The stability of the grid is further complicated by the fact that 330 MW’s restoration timeline is still unknown among the maintenance-related issues.

Furthermore, four thermal plants with a combined capacity of 595 MW are not operating because of a lack of fuel, and a fault in the TICO Unit 3 plant has caused 120 MW of power to remain unavailable until December 2024, affecting the capacity’s ability to generate power for the entire year.

Since March 27, power exports have been reduced, which highlights the magnitude of the situation and the need for quick action and careful planning.
