Cristiano Ronaldo amassed 63 free-kick goals compared to Lionel Messi’s 65 on Tuesday night against Al Shabab in the Saudi Pro League.
Football players have scored goals using a variety of techniques over the years, such as penalty kicks, long-range shots across the field, and corners.
Here are three of the best set-piece executors to have played the game:
Juninho Pernambucano is a name synonymous with the word ‘genius’ when it comes to set pieces. Once teammates with former Black Stars player Michael Essien at Olympique Lyon, the Brazilian was deadly at free-kicks and literally had the likes of Iker Casillas and Oliver Khan shaking when they met in the UEFA Champions League.
Juninho scored over seventy free-kick goals in his career.
One of the most graceful footballers ever to play the most beautiful sport, Italian Maestro Andrea Pirlo, netted over forty freekicks in his career.
The former Italian international played for the likes of Brescia, Reggina, Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, and New York Cifty FC.
The world of football is yet to witness another English player match the prowess of David Beckham when it comes to set pieces.
From his genesis at Manchester United to Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham, now a co-owner of MLS side Inter Miami, terrorized goalkeepers with his deadly right foot on set pieces.
