The renovation works at the famous Kaneshie Sports Complex, named after the legendary boxer Azumah Nelson, are expected to be done by December 2026.
Kaneshie Sports Complex has witnessed historical events occurring many times—from inter-school champions, tennis championships, and handball tournaments to even high school funfairs.
The sports centre became the abode of snakes as it eventually turned into a bush after years of neglect.
Citi Sports have reported that renovation works, which had begun in 2018 by New Case Construction Limited, were abandoned when Covid-19 struck and funding halted.
However, under the government of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the centre is one of ten others earmarked for development.
Work resumed in 2026, as the new Chief of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, targets December 2026 as the period of completion.
“The Hon. Minister for Finance allocated GHS20 million this year for CapeEx… We allocated GHS5 million to make sure we will be able to complete the pitch and also the tartan tracks.”
He admitted it would be 100 per cent completed, but it would be accessible while other aspects are worked on to ensure their completion.
