MAX NEWS: Gov’t must create enabling environment for children’s rights to be protected

Date:

Renowned lawyer David Olaga has called on the government to create an enabling environment for children to thrive in order for them to enjoy their right to education.

According to him, creating a conducive environment for children is very necessary for their development and for their right not to be trampled upon.

Speaking in an interview with Max Morning Dew in Accra on Monday, Olaga said the government must be held accountable if necessary interventions have not been initiated to enable parents to provide for their wards in gaining the requisite education.

“This is a holistic approach: First and foremost, every government must be held responsible. It’s not just about the parents. If the environment is not conducive, there’s no way I could take my child to school,” he said.

Olaga stated that Article 6 of the 1992 Constitution spelled out that the state has to ensure that certain facilities are put in place for conducive teaching and learning.

“In fact, when you look at Article 36, the government must provide that healthy environment,” he added.

When the government is unable to provide that environment for parents to send their wards to school, Olaga said it would be difficult to hold the parents accountable for their inability to make their wards enjoy the right to quality education.

He said the safety and well-being of children, to some extent, determined the kind of future leaders the country would have and expressed the need for government and parents to prioritize children’s education for them to enjoy their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
