Asamoah Gyan: ‘I’m not ready for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup’

Date:

Asamoah Gyan, a legend in Ghana, claims he is unfit and, more importantly, unprepared to be included to the Black Stars World Cup roster for the forthcoming tournament.

However, Asamoah Gyan affirmed that he would accept an invitation from the technical handlers to assist the team because of his background and knowledge.

Asamoah Gyan acknowledged in an interview with an Accra-based TV station that his current physical state does not permit him to play competitive football, and he will refrain from inserting himself into the debate about who should be selected for the tournament.

Despite this, he admitted that playing in his fourth World Cup would be a dream come true, but he is mindful of the fact that he is not in the ideal physical condition for playing football.

“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream. If I’m fit to play active football and I’m invited to play for the national team, why not. It’s not like 15 years ago when I was young and competitive and could argue to be in the starting line-up.

“This is a different thing together. Right now people want you to go in and show your experience. The thing is you just have to be fit and be ready for competitive football. If I’m fit and invited into the national team, why not?

“Every player will embrace such an opportunity. This is the case where I’m not ready now. If I’m not ready but the FA and staff feel they need me now, I will be available. That one is up to them”, he said.

The former captain of Ghana was explaining remarks he made to the BBC in which he was cited as saying, “I’d love to have a last dance at the biggest football celebration.”

Gyan claimed that his remarks were taken out of context and that others took them to mean that he desired to join the present team.

Asamoah Gyan is the most successful African in the history of the event with six goals scored.

In Group H of the 2022 World Cup, the Black Stars will compete against Uruguay, South Korea, and Portugal.

If the GFA extends an invitation to him, the 37-year-old record goal scorer for Africa believes he will be more than willing to contribute to Ghana’s participation.
