2026 FIFA WC QUALIFIERS: Okocha reveals why Nigeria produces many strikers

Date:

Retired Nigerian football legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha has shared his beliefs on why Nigeria, one of the biggest footballing countries in Africa produces a lot of strikers.

Popular Nigerian attackers include Vitor Osimhen of Napoli and Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen. Other notable Nigerian strikers are Umar Sadiq of Almeria, Kelechi Iheanacho of Leceister City, Gift Orban of KAA Gent, Terem Moffi of Nice, and Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest.

Compared to other national teams on the African continent, the Super Eagles have the most strikers.

In a recent interview, the former captain of Bolton Wanderers shared his thoughts on his beloved Super Eagles: “I will say football is part of our culture in Nigeria. And every kid in Nigeria wants to be a goal-scorer. [They] want to be noticed.”

He also continued with why kids dream of being strikers, “They realised that maybe the offensive midfielders, players, and strikers are the ones that get noticed more than defenders. And maybe because of nature.”

“Also, the way we are built has made [Nigeria] produce a lot of strikers,” Okocha added.
